The Jammu & Kashmir Branch Office of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a Jewellers Awareness Program at Maya Hotel Jalandhar, aimed at disseminating information about the mandatory HUID marks.

Around 20-25 percent of the industry's inventory still needs to be HUID hallmarked.

The second phase of the mandatory hallmarking will cover additional three caratages of gold jewellery/artefacts such as 20, 23 and 24 carats, as mentioned in the Indian Standard IS 1417

BIS has now made provision to allow a common consumer to get the purity of their un-hallmarked gold jewellery tested at any of the BIS recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centres

Consumers can view the details of hallmarked jewellery, such as type of jewellery, purity, name of AHC, name of the jeweller, date of hallmarking, through the BIS Care app

Mandatory hallmarking promises to bring transparency in the system and awards value for money to the ultimate consumer. The process however is far from simple
